Artist Ryohei Hase

Ryohei Hase is based in Tokyo, Japan where he went to school at Tama Art University.  He creates CD covers, websites, and so on.  His art revolves around finding beauty in the darkness of the mind.  A lot of his work involves themes with animals morphing into humans.  He worked with Bandai Namco Games from 2004 to 2008 to perfect his online coding and pictorial skills.  Much of his work is sold by print, rather than looked at on the computer.

Some of his images include:

His work is chaotic, which is in part why I choose this artist -- I intend to have a chaotic background in my work.  His pieces are very textural, highlighting the properties of the animals meanwhile the lighting on the bodies reveals human aspects.  The work looks like a bad, but vivid nightmare; it seems to be the kind of dream that is horrifying yet you want to stay asleep to resolve it and because it is so interesting.  I like how the lighting effects seem done in a painterly way, yet the image obviously has a digital feel to it in its details.  Originally I planned to do a crime scene but these images made me think something along the lines of a haunted house would be more fun.

I think the work could be better by having some parts slightly blurry, and some parts remaining crisp.  This would give the viewer an idea of where the artist's intention is for the viewer to look.  For example, the rug in the second image is so detailed that it detracts from the person and elephants which I assume are the intended main focus of the piece.  It is almost as if the artist is "showing off" too much.  However, I guess in a sense the details add to the overall dream-like feeling.  Because the images seem to tell a story, and the artists website is set up like film stills, it might be interesting to see series images.  The colors in the first image seem a bit predictable, such as the bright color of the blood, and are most interesting to me in the last image where the colors are more subtle and the focus is more on the lighting.
